The construction of ‘Maasvlakte 2’ marks a significant expansion of the port of Rotterdam. It is a Dutch success story worth telling. Together with consultancy company Hutspot, I designed and created an interactive model that shows how coherent control over the business case, the organization, substantive knowledge of complex cases and the surrounding stakeholders made it possible for Maasvlakte 2 to be built and be succesful.

The story of Maasvlakte 2 is complex and has many different perspectives. The best way to make it understandable is to create a logical context using a visual model as the foundation. This model is packed with multimedial stories of notable developments during the project. The interactive product was being used internally in the organization to secure knowledge and celebrate the project’s success. It has also been presented to the public to share insight and knowledge with people working in complex infrastructural projects like Maasvlakte 2.

How to tell a complex story

I started out explaining the ‘coherent control’ model with an animation.
The animations shows the model building up slowly, and introducing the individual elements one by one. Then the animation transitions into an interactive version of the model. The user takes control and can focus on the individual elements.

The blue dots that are shown on the model are connected to a series of multimedial stories that present notable developments of the project. Each story is unique in its visual form, but they all show how synergy was the key to success of Maasvlakte 2.

I designed a visual form of storytelling that I call ‘Matryoshka’: Starting with a general overview and then gradually focussing in on detail. In this case: Showing the chain of effects that large-scale dredging has on the environment.

An interactive whiteboard session explaining the benefits of contracting partners early on in the process.

A comic that explains how the problem of expected loss of air quality was tackled by making detailed agreements with stakeholders about proper compensation measures.

A short movie about the benefits of ‘Strategic Environment Management’, which resulted in a covenant with environmental parties to secure agreements on the execution and assessment of the construction of Maasvlakte 2.

The Benefits
